Christians Around the World Celebrate Palm Sunday, Commemorating Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem

April 13, 2025

Today, millions of Christians worldwide marked Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week, with services, processions, and reflections on the final days of Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry. The celebration commemorates the moment recorded in all four Gospels—Matthew 21, Mark 11, Luke 19, and John 12—when Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey, greeted by crowds laying palm branches and cloaks along His path.

The scene fulfilled the ancient prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, which foretold, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey.”

Echoes with cries of “Hosanna!”—a plea meaning “save us” that has become a song of praise. Palm branches, a symbol of victory and peace, were distributed to congregants and waved during liturgies, reenacting the joyful welcome given to Christ by the people of Jerusalem nearly 2,000 years ago.

Palm Sunday is not only a celebration—it is a paradox of praise and impending passion. “Palm Sunday teaches us about the fickleness of human hearts and the unwavering mission of Christ to save.”

Theologically, the day invites reflection on Jesus’ kingship—not one of political power, but of humility, self-sacrifice, and redemptive love. His entry into Jerusalem set into motion the events of Holy Week, culminating in the crucifixion on Good Friday and His resurrection on Easter Sunday.

As we prepare for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday, Palm Sunday stands as a theological threshold—marking both the arrival of the Messiah and the beginning of His journey to the cross.

For Christians, it is a day to celebrate the coming of the King—and to prepare their hearts for the deeper truths of His kingdom.
